Tu, what I did. For over a year, I ate, slept, washed, and dreamed of sh! T TCP / IP. I read everything I could get my hands on him in the excellent book by W. Richard Stevens RFC.
I came to the point where I may actually dreamed OSI layers believe it or not (so sad it may sound, some).
There is no quick way to learn the material, but perseverance is the key. A lot of reading and playing with software such as Wireshark, tcpdump, etc. These tools will help you a real understanding of what is happening on the web.
Another good book to read, for beginners to learn the Jumpstart is TCP / IP book from Sybex. I read this yonkers before and explained what was really in simple terms andFun to read.
The W. Richard Stevens books are excellent and you know the basics of TCP / IP socket programming in C using the Berkeley Sockets API. Good stuff. Good stuff, but for later on.
You can book Jumpstart "several" places on the Internet. Read it. You will love it, and it will be much wiser at the end.
And last but not least. Note, if I can teach TCP / IP for the mentally retarded man who lives at the end of my street, you can learn.
